Writing Box and Slope, Victorian Antique English Mahogany Wooden Case, Green Velvet, Hardboard Writing Slope, 12.5" x 9" x 4.25", Circa 1880

Back in the days when the written word was the communication of choice, the writing slope (or lap desk) was a valuable possession for every cultured individual who could write and travel regularly. Lap desks themselves were always personal items reflecting the tastes, style and social class of the owner.

This is a typical solid mahogany example of a writing box (or writing desk as Jane Austen called hers).

This mid-late 19th century example has an inlaid brass carry handle to top.

Please note that the key lock and closing mechanism that would have existed originally is no longer present and therefore the box cannot be carried using the handle any longer, although this would of course be possible to rectify if desired.

The mahogany wood is, in its construction and finish, in excellent original condition.

The box lid opens to reveal the black lined hard writing slope which sits inside the lid.

Also revealed is a green velvet covered area, a square space for an ink well to sit and an area dedicated most likely to sealing wax, ink, quills or pencils etc.

The green velvet covered compartment lifts up to reveal further areas for the storage and organisation of writing paper, envelopes, writing instruments and other equipment.

The brass handle atop the box is etched with 'B JONES' no doubt the original proud owner some 150 years ago.

Perfect for any well dressed vintage desk and lover of writing at home!

Purchased from an antiques market in the cosmopolitan coastal city of Brighton, England.

The box is heavy for its size weighing 2kg before any packaging therefore shipping would be based on a parcel weighing 4kg to ensure adequate materials are used for safe transit of this antique piece.
