FREE SHIPPING Cruet Set, Silver Plated, Early Victorian (1832- 1840) Thomas Wilkinson & Son, Cut Glass Bottles, Crystal Stoppers

Sorry, this item has sold.

Antique English Silver Plated Cruet or Condiment Set from the early Victorian era and a very early example of electro-plated Nickel Silver (EPNS). Comprising 4 cut glass bottles or pots which would have originally been used to serve oil, vinegar, pepper and mustard. The original mustard knife is included.

This beautiful set was made by Thomas Wilkinson & Son during the period the company operated from the Pelican Works Birmingham circa 1844.

It has beautiful cut crystal stoppers which are in immaculate condition and really set off the piece when they catch the sunlight. The whole set is in exceptionally excellent condition given its 170 years. The caps on the cut glass bottles are the originals and they have lost most of their silver plate on the outer side. Inside the lid of the mustard jar the original shiny silver plate can be seen in all its glory. However, this set is in such excellent condition that the wear on the caps does not detract, just enhances and indicates its age.

The base of the silver plated stand is in exceptionally good condition with the tiniest specs of tarnish that are almost negligible. This is so unusual as most sets of this kind will have marks left by the bottles which have stood on the same spot for so long.

The glass bottles are pillar cut around the sides with bridge fluting around their necks. As for the condition of the glass, there are no cracks and they have retained excellent clarity! I can find only one tiny nibble which is on the underside of the mustard pot. This is truly very rare indeed almost always a set of this age would have nibbles around the tops of the bottles where the stopper sits.

The pepper pot has a gorgeous touch with its set of holes arranged in a star shape around the tip of the silver plated lid. The mustard pot also has a tip and the edge of the lid has a 3 lined groove all the way around. The base is slightly elevated from the surface by four angled and stepped feet.

Measurements :

Each of the crystal stopper bottles measures 6" high including stopper x 1.5" diameter.

The pepper pot measures 5.25" high x 1.5" diameter.

The mustard pot 4" including finial x 1.5" diameter.

The mustard knife measures 4.5" x 0.5". The stand is 7.5" high x 4.75" wide (including the feet).

This set has been exceptionally well cared for during its life time and I'm sure it will go on to be loved and cherished for generations to come as a beautiful antique for the dining table.
